By far the most consistent healing hero is the Vestal, as she will always have the Divine Grace skill when employed by you. You aren't going to get very far without a healer.

His ability to pick off anyone in any position means, that despite his average stats, the Highwayman is a must-have for just about any run. Overall, the Highwayman is one of the most reliable and flexible heroes available in Darkest Dungeon. Not having a specific mastery like the Plague Doctor or the Flagellant makes him useful in any situation, thus making him a desirable teammate for plumbing dungeons and dealing with bosses. If you favor that move, you'll want Duelist's Advance to ensure he gets up to that front position, though that also exposes him to attacks on the front line. A combo of Pistol Shot, Grapeshot Blast and Open Vein can carry him through most dungeons easily, but moves like Point Blank Shot requires a specific build. Any one of these choices sees him in the second or third party slots, but it does affect the trinkets and quirks you want, as well as which of his self-boosting camping skills to use.Ī mixed build is the best, as it offers him the most flexibility in targeting, movement and damage-dealing. The Crimson Court trinkets act as a set, and whether used together or apart they're worth the risk of a little extra stress - especially when used together, as it greatly improves his chance of getting a Virtue when his resolve is tested. If you have the DLC, those are the trinkets you'll want to go after. Crystalline Gunpowder from Colors of Madness reduces his Stun resist like Flashfire Gunpowder does, but improves his damage and Speed over just boosting his ranged attacks. All his base trinkets trade off one thing for another, as the sheaths improve melee and movement but reduce his ranged skills, while the buckles improve ranged skills at the cost of his melee moves. Stalwart Buckle is one you should pass on too, as the greater stress and lower Virtue chance isn't a fair tradeoff for higher Crits. However, the Highwayman's disarm ability is so high already this doesn't seem like a fair tradeoff.

The Drifter's Buckle trades Dodge for stress and boosts his ability to disarm a trap. The Highwayman has several trinkets to pick from, mostly buckles and sheaths.
